Making Music: North East - Contacts

Alastair Lord

Alastair was born in 1983 in Hexham. He took up the trumpet aged 8 and quickly progressed, achieving grade 8 by the age of 13. At 16, he entered Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, before going on to study Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music, graduating in 2005. Now, Alastair works as a freelance trumpeter, conductor, composer and teacher throughout the North East of England.

Although classically trained, he performs a wide variety of music both professionally and in amateur groups, enjoying the challenge of moving from Classical to Jazz, Funk and Pop. He is currently Principal Trumpet of the Tynedale Orchestra, Soprano Cornet for Westoe Brass Band and he regularly guests for Cleveland Chamber Orchestra and the NTO. He plays for the popular function band Grooveline, and the exciting funk/soul group Mamacoca, in addition to guesting for the SoundPower Orchestra, along with regular shows, weddings and choral society engagements.

An area that is becoming increasingly important for Alastair is conducting. He directs the Riding Mill Choral Society (he also enjoys singing!) and the Ponteland Community Band. In October 2009, he will 'MD' his first show at the Peoples Theatre in Heaton, and he hopes to add orchestral conducting to this list before too long!

Alastair teaches music full time for both Northumberland and Newcastle Music Services and, as a result, spends a good deal of time composing and arranging music for children (it's good to know the degree was of some use, after all!). He continues to compose serious music also, when he has time (during the summer holidays, although that's as far as the comparison with Mahler can go I'm afraid).

Despite all this, Alastair finds time to enjoy walking, football and reading, and, like all proper brass players, he has a particular delight in Real Ale. He has had the pleasure of being a member of the MMNE committee since 2007 and is still wondering how he ended up there...
