Alex Murchie has sung in choirs since the age of 13, at school, and then with UCL College choir (where she studied Zoology) and the Royal Choral Society. Currently singing soprano with Cappella Novocastriensis and the Newcastle upon Tyne Bach Choir, she manages publicity for both of them. She loses no chance to sing in smaller ad hoc groups, enjoying plainsong, Morley canzonets, English & Italian madrigals, motets and part songs, and attends as many workshops and Summer Schools as she can afford! She has recently branched out into solo song, enjoying working on, among others, Dowland, Purcell, Fauré, Schubert, Finzi, Walton and Vaughan Williams. She is a frequent listener to chamber music of all periods. She is a long-standing member of the North East Committee, having been recruited to help run a choral workshop. In November 2008 she was elected its Chair. Her professional life has been spent at Tyne Tees Television as a researcher and producer of documentaries and current affairs; she is now freelance. When not making music, Alex flies light aircraft, and designs and makes gardens. She reads voraciously, and enjoys theatre and contemporary dance. She eats good food cooked by other people, complemented by a decent Sauvignon Blanc, and the odd dram of single malt. To counteract the ravages of the above, she has resumed fell-walking and Scottish country dancing in a belated attempt to keep the walls of her vascular system apart. In pursuit of the Ineffable, she intermittently practises Tai chi, and indulges in Shiatsu. |
