Making Music: North East - Contacts

Jonathan Scott

Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Jonathan enjoyed singing from a very early age, including a stint during his school years at Newcastle Cathedral with Russell Nissen. He enjoyed periods with the Newcastle Bach Choir and Cappella Novocastriensis whilst undertaking his studies for a BMus degree at Newcastle University, as well as extended periods with the St James’s Choral Group (now Jesmond Choral Group) and The Singers.

Conducting was always a first love starting with School and subsequently University orchestras and choirs. Jonathan currently conducts Jesmond Choral Group and the Priory Singers, Tynemouth. Previously conductor of Warkworth Village Choir, he also has close ties with Bishop Auckland Choral Society. Jonathan created the role of Bishop Richard Trevor in Changeling Productions’ 2007 oratorio/pageant The Painter and the Patriach. The work, commissioned by Bishop Auckland Choral Society, commemorates Zuberan’s paintings of Jacob and his twelve sons, bought by Bishop Trevor for the Bishops of Durham and now in the trust of the Church of England.

As well as singing with the Northern Sinfonia Chorus, Jonathan is also Chorus Librarian at their Sage Gateshead home. He also sings with the Northern English Singers (usually on their continental trips), with his own quartet (‘Small q’) and as a noted tenor soloist in the region with a repertoire ranging from Byrd and Monteverdi through to Finzi, Howells and (on one memorable occasion) Tippett.

Alongside his full-time job, Jonathan also finds time to be the Vice-Chair and Webmaster for Making Music North East and is on the management committee for the Jesmond Community Forum which promotes community and amateur societies in Jesmond. When not singing or conducting Jonathan likes to entertain friends with good food, wine, and music.
