I've recently returned to active participation in the performing arts after too long a period concentrating on a career in education. I have most recently appeared in the last three productions of the Gosforth Musical Society and have also appeared with the Jesmond Choral Group, the Priory Singers and St. Andrew's G&S Society. If you go back far enough in my career I used to appear in and direct shows from drama to touring ‘variety’ shows in North Devon and was involved in the organisation of the Taw and Torridge Festival, which became the Devon Festival of the Arts. This organisational side of my character is also shown in my former membership of the organising committee for the Beverley Chamber Music Festival and the Board of the Ryedale Festival. For the last two years I helped my partner’s orchestra (the TCO) with publicity and its developmental work with young musicians. This activity stems from when I was working full-time in education in Humberside and was part of the Arts Team of the advisory service and took a particular interest in the East Riding Youth Orchestra and performance work in post-sixteen education generally. I sponsored the percussion section – there lies a secret ambition! Because I was working as an adviser/inspector I developed an interest (and hopefully a little expertise) in assessing the quality of activities and in quality improvement. For the last 10 years I have worked freelance in this field, including four years supporting the improvement of the quality of teaching and learning at Leeds College of Music where I am now a member of their Governors' Quality and Standards Committee. |
