Cobweb Orchestra Leader Training

The Cobweb Orchestra is looking for leaders (in the sense of facilitator/conductors rather than first violinists) who want to develop their skills working with amateur orchestral musicians. Once trained, there are opportunities for paid work with the newly independent and expanding Cobweb Orchestra as a regional group leader or on a sessional basis.

What the training offers: One day studying repertoire and methods with the chance to try out your conducting with the Guinea Pig Orchestra. One session running an orchestral rehearsal with follow-up tutorial to discuss further development.

Trainer profile: We are looking for musicians with a wide variety of skills. You may be a community musician with an interest (possibly slightly rusty) in orchestras, or you may be an orchestral player who would like to try conducting and know more about how to run a successful ensemble, or a choir trainer who wants to diversify.

You can read full details of this exciting opportunity and how to apply here.

The Painter and the Patriarch (The 'Zurbaran' Oratorio)

Auckland Castle 22nd, 23rd, 24th March @ 7.30pm

Bishop Auckland Choral Society are staging a specially written oratorio by David Napthine, Duncan Brown and Greg Pullen, inspired by a unique collection of paintings by Spanish artist Francisco de Zurbaran depicting Jacob and his Twelve Sons dressed in Spanish peasant costume. The paintings have been housed in Auckland Castle since 1756, and it is here - home to the Bishop of Durham and one of the finest palaces in the Church of England - that this unique work will be performed. The Oratario, produced by theatre company Changeling Productions, will tell the story of the paintings interwoven with the Biblical story of Jacob. Local school children and members of the community will take part in an opening procession with music, movement and icons in the style of traditional religious processions of Seville and the performance concludes with a grand firework finale.

Soloists for the 3 performances will be Eliot Alderman (tenor), Richard Coxon (tenor), Paul Hudson (bass) and Jonathan Scott (tenor).

Anyone wishing to get involved contact Jill Cole, Project Manager on 01833 631838.

Medieval Workshops Weekend with Vivien Ellis

Whalton Village Hall, near Morpeth
Saturday 3 March and Sunday 4 March, 10.30am-4.30pm

Fee: £22/£20 per day or £40/£35 for the weekend

We are delighted to welcome Vivien Ellis back to the north east to lead two days of workshops on medieval and renaissance singing. The two days are different but complimentary, and singers may like to book for either day, or for both.

Sunday 4 March
Feather on the Breath of God
This workshop will focus on the Hymns and Antiphons of the remarkable visionary, spiritual teacher and composer Hildegard of Bingen. These chants are rich in mystical images, with elaborate melodies, ornamented inflections, and wide ranges. This workshop will be more demanding, and suitable for the more experienced singer.

On both days Vivien will use written music, but also teach the songs by ear.

Vivien Ellis is well known for her performances and recordings of early music. She sings with medieval-contemporary ensemble Sinfonye, early music group The Dufay Collective and Alva, a folk-medieval duo with fiddle player Giles Lewin. Vivien is an experienced teacher and has taught in vocal workshops all over the world.

You can find out information about Vivien Ellis, listen to song clips, and view photos of workshops on her website at www.alva.uk.com You can also listen to a podcast at: www.thamesvalleypod.tv/displaypodcast.php/id=186

Come and Sing - Carmina Burana

Alnwick Playhouse

Carmina Burana by Carl Orff is a hugely enjoyable and powerful choral piece to be performed on February 3rd after just one day's rehearsal. Peter Brown will lead singers of any standard who want to experience this piece and have fun in two workshops to learn the music and then in a scratch performance. We hope to have a large choir in the auditorium of the theatre with the audience on the stage. There is a musical ensemble of two pianists and five percussionists, and local soloists Tim Jones and Veronica Gilbert. The piece is a setting of thirteenth century poems written by student clergy or defrocked monks and include lusty drinking songs and raunchy love poems - in Latin, though Peter will translate them! This is a rare opportunity to sing this exciting work.
The workshops are from 11-1 and 2.30-5, with the performance at 7.30. Music is provided and dress informal.

Tickets: £12 for singers (£5 students) and £5 for audience only. Pre-booking possible (though not essential on 01665 510785. More information from 01665 576669.

Six of the Best in Concert

The Samling Foundation, one of the country's leading arts and music charities, starts the New Year by bringing its acclaimed vocal Masterclass back to The Sage Gateshead and welcomes one of the world's most distinguished tenors.

Philip Langridge, a new member of Samling's growing Masterclass team, will be taking time out of his busy international schedule to join Scottish soprano Patricia MacMahon, two of the country's finest actors Barbara Leigh-Hunt and Richard Pasco, vocal consultant Paul Farrington and pianists Caroline Dowdle and Sophia Rahman.
