On average there are 90 to 100 annual subscription members who will pay this season just £48 for the six concerts. Door sales and single ticket purchases are very important to the society, often increasing the audience by 30%.
The Society is a registered charity and it receives funding each year from charitable trusts, local organisations and the Town Council. However, our volunteer fundraisers work hard to maintain this income.
The concerts take place in the intimate setting of the panelled ballroom of
Promoting the season starts early; in January the audience are given a leaflet outlining details of the following season's concerts. This is followed, in late spring, by a second flyer with artists photographs and programmes then in August our brochure with subscription application forms becomes available, as does our poster campaign. The website is updated in August and can be found at the link below.
The concert season 07/08 is going to be very exciting for a number of reasons, but not without a wee bit of nail-biting. We are using a new venue for three concerts, Morpeth Methodist Church. It holds 70% more people than our present venue; so to fill this hall we have increased our budget for artists considerably. The Ripon Cathedral Choir in January is a complete change from anything we have had before, The Emperor Piano Trio follows the Choir in February and the climax will be a recital by the world famous pianist John Lill in March, quite an event for Morpeth.
The Society assists the young musicians in the town in different ways. Last season in December Sarah Beth Briggs and her ensemble held a master class for a few musicians from King Edward VI school, and this year the Coull Quartet will do the same. In December Mark Simpson will be talking to students about composing. We supply, through donations from our members, free concert tickets to local schools and this year we introduced a scholarship, for a named student, which lasts one year and pays for additional music lessons. This was made possible by a bequest in her will from Eileen Bowler.
Having seen an idea in the Making Music magazine from another Society we decided to issue a newsletter in June each year to update and inform our members of events; only time will tell if this is useful. We are always looking to improve and if possible to move forward.
